The Village Well

We take it for granted that when we need water, we simply turn on the tap. It was not always so and this photograph, taken in the 1890s, shows a young girl fetching water from a communal well, which would have been fed by a local spring. This was heavy work, undertaken several times a day, and just one of many chores carried out by children. As we see from TV charity ads, children around the world are still doing this and often in far more difficult circumstances than shown here.
