The Steel Works

Britain was once a world leader in construction and heavy engineering. We built ships, railways and bridges throughout our Empire and all of them needed steel. This photograph of a steel works was probably taken in the 1930s. Even in the 1960s, when I worked in one for a while, they were hot, dirty and dangerous. In this photograph, the men are using a 12 ton hammer to beat a piece of hot steel into the required shape.
