The Lifeboatman

Lifeboat crews are celebrated today for the remarkable work that they do. It was always so and in Victorian times, before lifeboats had engines, they manned the oars to row to the scene of a disaster at sea. They had very little special clothing to keep them safe, other than life-jackets made of cork, worn here by an old-timer.
