The Hay Wain is probably John Constable’s most famous painting. It captures a rural scene in southern England in a pre-industrial era. Victorians were nostalgic for such peace and tranquility and this photograph, taken by a professional photographer in the 1890s for re-sale purposes, was a rather blatant attempt to exploit this market. ‘Wain’ is simply another name for a cart.
