There is something very satisfying about a symmetrical image, whether composed deliberately or not. This one of the Clifton steps in St. Peter Port, Guernsey, is a far cry from the tourists’ delight that the island is today. The steps are still there, of course, but gentrified, as are the properties either side of them. Taken in the Victorian period, it shows local women whose menfolk are probably at sea earning a meagre crust.
