Ocean Liner

This photograph dates from the 1920s, the heyday of transatlantic crossings by luxurious ocean liners, and although not captioned, probably shows ‘RMS Majestic’ (a sister-ship to Titanic and owned by the White Star Line) in dry dock for repairs. RMS stands for ‘Royal Mail Ship’ meaning that the liner had a contract to carry mail between Great Britain and the United States. The propellers dwarf the men working on them and, as always with historical images of people at work, there is a complete absence of even the most basic safety measures.
