This delightful hand-coloured photograph dates from the 1880s and shows children picking hops in Kent. Hops are, of course, used to make beer and picking them was a very labour-intensive process. Up to 40,000 people, including whole families, would migrate from London each year to help with the harvest, often returning to the same farms for what was, in effect, a working holiday.
