We are very wary of taking photographs of children, especially other people’s. Victorian photographers would not have understood our concerns and, as a consequence have, thankfully, left us with some remarkable images of children’s lives. We tend to think of Victorian childhood in terms of poverty, squalor, disease and early death but that’s not the whole story. This photograph dates from the early 1900s and shows the joy of kids having fun with friends on a beach.
