In the 1920/30s, ocean liners crossing the Atlantic were steam powered. The steam was generated by burning coal which had a journey of its own, from being mined underground to the surface; loaded onto trains; by horse and cart to the docks and barge to the ship then, as we see here, manually loaded onto a ship and shovelled into its boilers …. and this process was repeated wherever ships docked around the world.
