Brodsworth Colliery

Brodsworth Colliery, located near Doncaster, was a major coal mine employing, by the 1980s, thousands of men. The first shaft was dug in 1905 and this photograph was probably taken just a few years later. Given that our pits our now long gone and their spoil heaps have been reclaimed, it is easy to forget how important a role they played, not only in fuelling our industry but in creating strong, tightly-knit communities.
