A Northampton Horse Tram

We have a bit of a tram theme today. This one of a horse tram in Northampton probably dates from the 1880s. Trams such as these weren’t heated, of course, and had wooden, slatted seats, so we can imagine how uncomfortable they were in the rain and on a cold Winter’s day, especially ‘up top’. Nevertheless, they enabled ordinary people to travel to work and shops and visit friends at affordable fares, so a bit of discomfort was a price worth paying. The only place where horse trams operate in the UK today is Douglas on the Isle of Man ….. and delightful they are too!
