This is Lochnagar in Scotland, made famous by Lord Byron and Prince Charles who wrote, respectively, a poem and children’s book of the same name. However, what’s more interesting is the process used to produce the picture. The chromolithographs in our archive date from the 1880s. They are illustrations rather than photographs but have a quality, depth, luminescence even, which is far richer than other prints of the period. This was achieved by printing each colour one at a time and could involve many pressings. The very best ones took months to complete, were expensive to produce and buy and were often used for exquisite prints of birds and flowers.
